Lactobacillus acidophilus

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a type of bacteria found in your intestines. It’s a member of the Lactobacillus genus of bacteria, and it plays an important role in your overall health.  They make lactic acid by breaking down carbohydrates, which is primarily done by breaking down the sugar lactose in milk.  L. acidophilus helps put good bacteria into the intestines.   Whether it’s obtained through foods or supplements, L. acidophilus can provide a variety of health benefits including boosting the immune system, promoting weight loss, improving symptoms associated with IBS, and preventing and reducing diarrhea.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus

One of the most well-studied friendly bacteria is Lactobacillus rhamnosus (L. rhamnosus), which is available as a dietary supplement and added to a variety of foods, such as dairy products.  L. rhamnosus is a type of bacteria found in your intestines. It belongs to the genus Lactobacillus, a type of bacteria that produce the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the sugar lactose into lactic acid.  Lactobacillus rhamnosus is adapted to survive in your gut, thus potentially offering longer-term benefits, and health benefits including the prevention or treatment of diarrhea, relief from IBS symptoms such as bloating and pain, and overall gut health.

Bifidobacterium longum

Bifidobacterium longum is one of most essential inhabitants in the human body. This bacterium is very helpful because it maintains a normal digestive tract, inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria, and may provide various health benefits.  Bifidobacterium longum is one of numerous Bifidobacteria species found in human digestive flora, microbes usually found in the human digestive tract.  Numerous studies have shown Bifidobacterium longum to have health benefits including diarrhea prevention, improvement of lactose intolerance symptoms, immune system support, and more.

Bifidobacterium bifidum

Bifidobacterium bifidum is believed to have multiple health benefits, and be among the first microbes to colonize the human gastrointestinal tract.  Bifidobacteria have been shown to support diarrhea prevention, reduction of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome, promoting immunity, and a variety of other health issues.

Lactobacillus brevis

Lactobacillus brevis is a type of lactic acid bacteria found in milk products and in some plants as they decompose. This probiotic strain may help treat diarrhea in children and support natural killer (NK) cell activity in older adults. NK cells are a type of pathogen-killing cells that fight off infections and stop the growth of cancer cells.  L. brevis has also been shown to support improved mood, heart health, and the effectiveness of antibiotics.

Lactobacillus bulgaricus

Lactobacillus d. bulgaricus is a beneficial bacteria found in the digestive tract. It stimulates the growth of other beneficial bacteria, and serves as a culture starter in yogurt and probiotic manufacturing. In your body, the lactic acid produced by L. bulgaricus helps keep the pH in the small intestine too low for harmful bacteria growth to occur. Early-stage research suggests that Lactobacillus bulgaricus may play a role in managing the common cold, diarrhea caused by antibiotics, IBS symptoms, and more.

Lactobacillus casei

Lactobacillus casei is a species of genus Lactobacillus found in the human urinary tract and mouth, and is one of the more widely researched species.  L. Casei are used to prevent or treat diarrhea, and may have an effect on other digestive problems, including colic constipation Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), lactose intolerance, and ulcerative colitis.

Lactococcus lactis

Lactococcus lactis is a microbe classified unofficially as a Lactic Acid Bacterium because it ferments milk sugar (lactose) to lactic acid. Lactococcus lactis has been used for centuries in the fermentation of food especially cheese, yogurt, and similar.  Due to its immunomodulatory properties, and its capability to survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), yet not colonize the gut unlike Lactobacillus spp., L. lactis has been used as a vehicle to deliver therapeutics such as cytokines into the human body.

Lactobacillus paracasei
paracasei has been found to boost the immune system, and studies in mice have also shown that L. paracasei improves immune system function by increasing the production of cytokines. L. paracasei may help to boost the number of beneficial Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the gut, while also decreasing harmful bacteria, strengthening the intestinal barrier, and improving absorption of nutrients from food.

Streptococcus thermophilus

Streptococcus thermophilus is a thermophilic lactic acid bacterium customarily and widely used as a starter in manufacturing dairy products such as cheese and yogurt. At birth, S. thermophilus is among the first colonizers of the GI tract and may impact the maturation and homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium after birth.  This probiotic is often found in the colon and has many digestive, immunity & many other researched health benefits.  Research during the past two decades has revealed that S. thermophilus has properties that make it one of the most commercially important of all lactic acid bacteria.  As a non-motile, fermentative, and facultative aerobe probiotic, S. thermophilus doesn’t ‘travel’ throughout the body. Instead, it kickstarts the fermenting processes in the small intestine and can survive in a deoxygenated medium without suffering any damage to its biological structure. Its special structure also means that it can survive in higher temperatures; hence its name.   Streptococcus thermophilus, is an important strain that may support colon health, support the immune system, protect against small intestine irritation, and also fight against antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
